A Different Drummer

I get the feeling Amnesty isn't happy with Hosni

Amnesty International has described the current batch of Egyptian constitutional amendments being put through the parliament as "the most serious undermining of human rights safeguards in Egypt since the state of emergency was re-imposed in 1981."

In case that wasnt clear enough, they also said that the amendments will "enrich the long-standing system of abuse under Egypt's state of emergency powers and give the misuse of those powers a bogus legitimacy."

Luckily, the Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit addressed these concerns in a thoughtful way, explaining how such worries are overblown and misguided. He released a statement explaining that
"Non-Egyptians do not have the right even to merely give their opinions about an issue that is considered at the heart of the country's internal matters,"

Well, its good that we have explained...Here I was mistakenly thinking that the London-based Amnesty had the right to express their opinions about whatever they wanted. Thanks for clearing that up, Ahmed.

I have had so many discussions with my dad and we are both mortified at the degree of cunningness that the government is showing. But what is more trubbling is that people think they are doing a good thing, people are blinded by the fact that the emergency law is being lifted and cannot see past it.

The government seems to have a good grip on things. The last consitutional ammendment was a joke, the election system makes it 10 times harder for candidates to run. I went to vote, i read it and was offended by how stupid my government thought i was - it's rediculous. Bt what does the gov do to fool people, they make the last election completely free, so people are blinded by that and do not see that the ammendment is a huge step backwards.

This is exactly what they are doing now. The only Act we have in the cunsitution that protects human rights, they want that removed. AND PEOPLE DO NOT SEE THAT!
    It's enfuriating.
And what's bad is that Bush is taking Hosni as a mentor! The patriot act, guantanamo, military courts to prosecute terrorits!

Tom, let's get together and chat about this where no one can get imprisoned for saying his opinion on a blog...

Once I was in China checking google news. I was excited by a link saying 'china has released new laws on freedom of speech/media however the Chinese government claims that it does not make the whole situation worse'. I clicked the link and it was blocked already.

    Speechless...
