A Different Drummer

Saying bye bye beardie

My best effort at growing an epic Jim Morrison style beard finished on Friday with a proper Cairo-style shaving, complete with threading, an old-timey shave with a straight razor and layer after layer of oils and creams and steam treatment. This isn't a beauty salon experience I'm talking about, this was a typical Cairo street barber - for such a masculine culture, Egyptian men sure do put an emphasis on extensive facial care.

The images tell the story of a man saying farewell to an old friend:
Beard-1

A close-up, just so you know what we are dealing with here...

Beard-2

It begins - apprehension is the name of the game...

Beard-3

A Muslim Brotherhood style beard is approaching....

Beard-4

If I walked out of the barber like this, I probably would have been arrested....

Beard-5

Going for Abe Lincoln chic...

Beard-6

Naked, vulnerable, powerless.......Goodbye, old friend. We will meet again.

Whoa, well done on hiding how *gorgeous* you have been all this time under that beard.. :) What were you thinking? No, don't meet that old friend again, say goodbye for good, trust me.. :)

Honestly though looking at these pics, it is incredible how that beard took your eyes and made them disappear into your face. And now, not. :)

OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOD! You look so cute!!! Your face shaved looks as soft as a baby's but!

I cant really say I am glad you shaved it like your other friends - cause that was like a unique attribute to you that I loved despite the barbaricness of it - but you really do look quite handsome without the bush!

Tell me darling? why have you decided to finally do it...

    Missing you...

    Tom,

I've never met you. But those pics are damn hilarious.

As a formerly-fellow bearder, I must say that, although I question your decision to part with the man-hair, I respect the dignity with which you de-coiffed your face.

Cheers and I hope you enjoy your new life with your chin!

    Best,

    Jim

Oh man, that beard totally held the whole face together.

the men seem to be generally pro-beard, while the women are swinging solidly anti-beard.

given that dudes don't give a toss what other dudes look like, it seems like i made the right decision....
